Selena
She was a musician singer-performer, and designer who broke down barriers in the industry. She was Mexican-American, but still traditional. She was the first to bring Tejano into mainstream music. It was an emerging star who's tragic death threw it into turmoil. It is also the case when a brilliant, genial and young artist passes away too early people mourn the possibilities that she could not yet reach. Her fans have worked even harder in an effort to not forget what she's achieved. The tragic death of Selena by a shooter triggered an outpouring of emotion in Latino communities similar with the reaction to Elvis Presley's death and John Lennon's. A hugely popular performer within Latino communities across North America her music crossed cultural boundaries to touch the lives of young as well as old. Selena was a sexy, flamboyant performer on stage who was sometimes referred to by her as the Latina Madonna. On stage, Selena was an outstanding role model, as she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
